Molokai is the result of prehistoric volcanic activity, through which it was pushed to the surface of the Pacific Ocean some 1.5 billion years ago. It is believed that Molokai's first settlers came from the Marquesas, and from Tahiti and a few other from isolated South Pacific locations. They arrived in 650 AD, bringing with them all the agriculture and supplies they needed in order to survive. A complex social system was formed, based around spirituality and nature. A highly spiritual figure was the prophet Lanikaula who lived during the late 16th century and he was one of the most appreciated in Hawaii's history. Lanikaula is perhaps very famous for his prophesy to King Kamalalawalu. He predicted that, if the king joined in a battle to win the Big Island, he would be defeated. This warning enraged the king, who promised to burn Lanikaula alive when he returns. However, he could not keep his promise, because he died in that battle.
Molokai had many chiefs. Besides, the islands of Maui and Oahu were in a constant struggle to win control of the island. Molokai was visited by Europeans in 1786.
By 1795, a chief named Kamehameha had taken control of the entire Hawaiian island chain.

After Kamehama's takeover, he headed a movement that resulted in complete evacuation of Molokai's Kalaupapa Peninsula. In 1865, he confined those suffering from leprosy to the desolate area, where they were then left to live out their days in suffering. This was the lowest point in Molokai's history. In 1873, a Belgian priest named Father Damien arrived on Molokai, bringing with him a renewal of faith and hope for residents of the colony. Father Damien renewed Molokai's reputation as a healing island. Many retreats are housed on the island now, and it offers tranquility to those looking for an escape from modern-day stress.
