Halawa Valley
East Molokai, Highway 450
It is one of the most beautiful areas in Molokia, Halawa Valley was first settled in the 7th Century by people from the Marqueses Islands. It remained an active community until the area was struck by two tsunamis. These huge tidal waves hit in 1946 and 1957, destroying the buildings there and covering the valley with plant-killing salt.
Nowadays the valley is inhabited by a few residents but it is mainly used for recreational purposes such as hiking and camping in the mountains and swimming, surfing or fishing at Halawa Beach Park.

Our Lady of Sorrows Church
Highway 450

Built in 1874, the church remains in excellent condition and is beautifully silhouetted by the mountains. Father Damien's second Catholic church on Molokai was Our Lady of Sorrows. During his visits to St. Joseph's, Father Damien would also stop and say Mass here. Even though he was extremely ill with leprosy for several years prior to his death, Father Damien maintained his arduous schedule.
